Meals: Planning Ahead

Jump to:

Note: This is an old post and the Lifeskills Planner is no longer available. However, you can get a free copy of my meal planner, plus 2 grocery shopping lists and more in the Library. Just fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

Today is Thursday, the day I do my meal planning for the coming week. I typically grocery shop on Fridays, so I like to have my list together beforehand.

My mom (who had ADD) really tried to put together a plan and a list for her shopping but it rarely worked for her.

Since I have more kids and less time than she did (plus I like to cook), I make a bigger effort at having my meals planned in advance.

If you have purchased your copy of the Lifeskills Planner you will notice that there is time set aside for you to do your meal planning, a place to write it down, and a planning session that lets you figure out in advance that you’re going to need something quick and easy for dinner at least one night.

For instance, tonight my dinner went together in a snap. The longest cooking time was waiting for the pasta. I knew that I was going to be busy today, so I planned ahead.

Last week I made a pork loin for dinner in the crock pot. (Another favorite trick – throw it in the crockpot and dinner’s done.)

Anyway, I bought a big enough pork loin so that there would be enough for two meals. Tonight I tossed the leftover meat with some carrots, onions, and garlic, added a little soy sauce and dumped it into some noodles. It’s a Filipino dish I learned years ago and we all love it.

The Nester over at Nesting Place wrote a great article last month about how she meal plans. Prepare to get lost in her blog. I once wrote her and told her that Nesting Place was like crack for me. I just couldn’t get enough!

She has some great, casual and easy ideas for meal planning, not to mention the way she can decorate her house with couch change and dryer lint and make it look fabulous!

Oh, and for all of you ADD Moms out there – be sure to check out her motto – “It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Beautiful”. You might also want to check out her posts on how less can be more.

We can learn a thing or two from the Nester!
