Why Your Wishes Will Never Come True

I Hate to Burst Your Bubble…

You know that Disney song – about wishing on stars and your dreams coming true?

You know that’s not real, right?

It would be nice if it were, but let’s face it: it’s not going to happen.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery, author, The Little Prince

So if your wishes aren’t going to come true simply by wishing on stars or birthday candles, how will they?

You Need a PlanAn ADD Woman Why Your Wishes Will Never Come True

Why can’t you put yourself in charge of your wishes instead of your fairy godmother and make them come true yourself?

I know it’s a little bit harder that way, but really – when was the last time you saw your fairy godmother?

Think about it.

What do you wish for?

Wishes to Goals

So what’s the difference between a wish and a goal?

Well, if we listen to Antoine, it’s a plan.

To turn a wish into a goal, the first thing is often to clarify it.

“I wish I was rich” turns into assigning a number to the word “rich”, or perhaps just a lifestyle – your goal – and then making a plan as to how to get there:

  • Go back to school to get a better job to make more money
  • Stop eating out, learn to cook, and save the money
  • Learn to meal plan and save even more money
  • Take a class on budgeting

“I wish I was skinny” means defining your ideal weight (your goal) and then making a plan to get there. You know this one; I don’t have to spell it out.

How Many Wishes?

How many wishes do you get?

As many as you want!

What about goals? How many of those do you get?

Again – as many as you want!

The thing about goals, though, is that you can achieve them, but it takes time and work.

And one thing you can say about those of us with ADHD – we are enthusiastic!

Goals? Bring them on! I want all the goals!

Are You Willing?

Well, as I said, you can have as many as you want, but you also have to have the time and perseverance to work for them.

I’ve got no science behind this, but I’m guessing you could accomplish one ginormous goal in a year if you broke it down month by month, then week by week, and then maybe even further. And you stuck with it.

And along with that, you could probably accomplish maybe two or three smaller ones too.

Think of a really big goal for yourself. One that seems too crazy to be anything but a wish.

Say you want to be rich – whatever that means to you.

Now, if you put a plan in place, and worked at it consistently, you could get there.

Maybe in a year; maybe not.

But what if, next year at this time, you had $10,000 more in your savings account than you do right now?

How would that make you feel?

Maybe a little rich?

So this year, go ahead. Blow out the candles on your birthday cake and make a wish.

But just remember, you can have it, if you want it.

Because you are your own fairy godmother.
