Teepees and ADHD

We spend a lot of time talking about the negative aspects of having ADHD.

We’re forgetful, can’t focus or pay attention, can’t get organized or manage our time effectively.

But there are some good things about having ADHD.

We are right brained thinkers.

That means that we think outside the box.

We see connections where others don’t.

Left brained people are linear thinkers; they only see as far as the next logical step.

But as right brained thinkers, we see all kinds of possibilities, even ones others would say were crazy. Think about the way that your mind works. It’s all over the place, right?

That can be a good thing because it makes connections so fast and so creatively that you can come up with new ideas that others never would.

Our creativity isn’t just limited to the way we think; we are creative in many ways.

For instance, I consider my writing a creative outlet and I love to do crafts and make up new recipes.

You may express your creativity through art, music, or even through humor.

The picture above is a teepee that my husband and I made for our 3 year old grandson. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, ever since I saw them on Pinterest.

My husband drilled the holes for the dowels and strung them together with my help. (I had to hold them up.)

Then we added the canvas. It was just a painter’s drop cloth that we stapled onto the dowels.

Then the real fun began.

Seriously, I’ve been working on this project for 5 days and having so much fun!

I made 7 different animals out of felt, plus 5 fish. That big guy is a moose; I’m changing his face so that you can see it more.

I can’t tell you how much this creative endeavor has changed me.

I’ve got craft stuff all over the place and I’m in the middle of 3 different projects. I’m happy and I’m enjoying myself.

This kind of stuff – creative stuff – whether it’s crafting or whatever – is good for you and your soul.

Make more time for it. It’s so worth it.

What do you create?

  1. I agree that we think outside the box and that ADHD minds are so very creative and and beautiful. We are so often misunderstood and can be intense to the point that people are turned off by us. Great blog post
