My Top Secret for Being More Productive

Jump to:

As women (or men) with ADHD, it can be hard to get things done and be as productive as we need to be. We’re easily distracted, have trouble prioritizing, and don’t always make the best use of our time.

But I have found a simple and surefire solution that works every time to help you get more done. Note that this does not apply if you are on the computer, but I’ve got a solution for that too.

Are you ready?

Are you sure?

Here it is:

Don’t sit down.

It really is that simple.

Think about some of your top time wasters: FaceBook, Pinterest, anything online, TV, even eating food when you’re not hungry.

You’re sitting down for most of those things.

I realized this one weekend when I noticed my husband going about the house getting stuff done. I was sitting on the couch not getting anything done.

I felt a little bad and a little guilty, so I decided to get up and do something. In fact, I decided not to sit down at all for a while.

You know what?

I got so much done! Not only that, but after a while it turned into a sort of game with myself. How long could I go without sitting down? How much could I accomplish?

When I finally did sit down – for dinner – I felt so good. I had turned just another wasted day into a productive one. And when that happens, you can sit down and enjoy your computer or television worry and guilt free.

Now if part of your day involves actual work on the computer and you could use some focused time to work on it without getting distracted by FaceBook and other sites, then I have a couple of solutions for you.

Nanny is a Google Chrome extension that limits the number of tabs that you can have open at once. You set the number. This can help as long as you don’t include distracting sites in your tab limit.

If you’re not using Google Chrome, consider Mac Freedom. It works for both Macs and Windows. Freedom locks you out of the internet completely for up to 8 hours. The only way to get back online is to either let the time run out or reboot your computer, which also discourages cheating.
