Do you ever get to the end of a day and wonder where it went? Do you feel as though you’ve wasted the entire day with nothing to show for it?
Yeah, me too.
It’s pretty common for people with Attention Deficit Disorder to feel that way, and even worse – they’re often right.
There are a few reasons for this.
One of the biggest reasons we feel as though we haven’t done anything all day is that maybe we haven’t. We have a lot to get done but often we don’t know where to begin. Or we’re so overwhelmed by all that we have to do that we just don’t do anything.
Another reason is that, like kids and their Christmas lists, we put far more on our to do lists than is reasonable. So when we get to the end of the day and we’ve only gotten to number 3 out of 965 things to do that day, we feel like a failure.
Here are a couple of ideas for you to help get things done and feel as though you have accomplished something.
When you’re stuck or overwhelmed pick anything and just begin. If you can’t face finishing it, commit to 15 minutes worth. Hey it’s better than nothing.
Keep your to do list reasonable. In addition to the things you do daily, like the dishes, plan on one or two things from your list. In my Lifeskills Planner, I suggest 3 things a week.
Keep a dump list of everything that you need to do. Then once a week or so pick a couple of things from that list and schedule them into your week. Assign them a day and if you have to, a time as well. Then keep it as though you would an appointment.
Keep a list of things that you did accomplish each day. It’s important to focus on the positive, not the negative.
Finally, if you keep a written to do list, instead of crossing things off as they get done, get a bright colored highlighter and highlight them. You’d be surprised at how good it makes you feel.
