You Are Not a Deficit or a Disorder

Having ADHD makes us feel bad about ourselves.

We always seem to focus on the things we can’t do instead of the things we can.

Instead of living in a tightly constricted box where everything is neat and orderly, we choose to live outside the box freely and with abandon. That is, we could if we would let ourselves do it.

But that isn’t the way “people” live. And by “people” we mean those who don’t have ADHD.

You know what? I think they’re missing out on a lot.

When they look at the sky all they see are clouds.

We see men who can fly and trips to the moon.

We see possibilities where they see facts.

They say “it can’t be done” and we say “why not?”.

Don’t beat yourself up because your brain doesn’t function the way most people’s do.

Celebrate because it doesn’t.

Celebrate your intelligence, your creativity, your unique way of looking at the world. See these as the gifts they are.

Sure, those “other people” have some skills that we could use, like being a little more organized and learning to manage time. We need those things to manage day to day life.

But don’t overlook your own special gifts just because you struggle to find your keys and arrive on time.

You were put on this earth – exactly as you are – for a reason.

Concentrate on finding your reason and not on your “deficits” and “disorders”.
