Organizing a Closet

Jump to:

A messy closet can really affect your entire day.

Getting up and getting dressed and ready to leave can be a huge hassle if you can’t find what you need when you need it. And when you do find it, if it’s wrinkled or dirty, you’ve lost even more time.

That doesn’t just apply to clothes closets. All closets should be organized to the point that you can find what you need quickly and easily.

I have a few tips to help you do just that.

First off, forget about emptying it out and then putting everything back. That method just creates another mess somewhere else and makes you feel overwhelmed. Plus you probably won’t get everything done in a day and that just makes the chaos multiply rather than diminish.

So tip #1: Start by taking a good look at what’s going on in your closet. Where is the biggest mess or trouble spot? For me, it’s all about the floor. I have no storage system for my shoes nor do I have any method for storing dirty clothes. (Other than throwing them on the floor, of course.)

So find your trouble spot(s) and begin there.

Tip #2: Brainstorm. What would be the best way to contain this mess? And don’t forget ease of use during this step. I mean, I could throw my dirty laundry in a garbage bag and put all my shoes in an old suitcase, but that wouldn’t make my closet look more organized or help me find my shoes.

Tip #3: Once you’ve figured out a containment system, take a look at what size it needs to be. It does you no good to buy a cute shoe organized that holds 5 pairs of shoes when you own 20. If you’re containing something like sweaters or scarves, stack them up and measure the pile so you know how big the basket needs to be.

Tip #4: As you’re going through your closet, be sure to keep an eye out for things that you no longer wear or that don’t flatter you. If those cute shoes leave blisters every time you wear them, get rid of them. Donate what you can; dump the rest.

Tip #5: Once you have a good idea of what needs to go into your closet to help keep it organized, think about coordinating the containers, hangers, etc. A closet with hangers all the same color and boxes and baskets that go with one another looks neater and more organized than one with a hodgepodge of containers.

Tip #6: Arrange your clothes in some sort of order. Pants with pants, casual tops together, work clothes together, etc. It makes it easier to find what you need.

Finally, take a few minutes each day or week to keep your closet neat. It may take a while to find the perfect system for you, but your reward will be worth it.
