Life with ADHD isn’t always a walk in the park, but having the right tools and activities can make a massive difference. Over the years, I’ve learned that engaging in certain hobbies has helped me manage my ADHD and has brought joy and calm to my life. Today, I want to share four activities with surprising benefits for ADHD adults that have given me much-needed stimulation and relaxation.
1. Building Model Rockets
Hear me out on this one! Building model rockets has surprising mental health benefits, even though it may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Trust me, model building has been a total game-changer. I started this hobby on a whim, thinking it’d just be a fun weekend distraction, but it turned into something much more meaningful.
The process of assembling the rocket engages my hands and my mind, giving me just the right amount of stimulation without feeling overwhelmed. Plus, following detailed instructions (with breaks, of course!) has taught me patience and focus. Though this activity may not seem exciting at first, there’s truly nothing like the thrill of launching a rocket into the sky. Personally, I like to think of it as a metaphor for how God gives us the tools we need to soar if we’re willing to put in the work.
2. Gardening
Digging in the dirt has an amazing way of grounding me—not just literally, but spiritually as well. There’s something about nurturing plants and watching them grow under my care that feels like a gentle reminder of God’s provision.
Additionally, gardening provides a calming sensory experience while still keeping me active—plus it’s a fantastic break from screen time! Each time those little buds start to bloom, it feels like a tiny miracle.
3. Journaling With Prompts
Writing my thoughts out has always been a challenge for me, at least until I found structured journaling prompts. Prompts provide focus so my brain doesn’t wander all over the place, and I get to process what I’m feeling in an organized way. To add a faith-based element to my journaling, I like to write down a daily prayer intention or reflect on Scripture alongside my thoughts. I’ve found that journaling helps with self-awareness and strengthens my relationship with God.
4. Dancing
Whether it’s in a dance class or just in my living room, dancing helps me release all that pent-up energy. The music puts me in a good mood, and the movement helps me feel more connected to my body. It’s like a mini exercise session, but way more fun than going to the gym! Plus, dancing reminds me to celebrate the unique way God made me, ADHD and all.
It’s incredible how everyday activities can bring structure, calm, and even a sense of accomplishment. By practicing these four activities with surprising benefits for ADHD adults, I’ve discovered a way to work with my ADHD instead of against it. If you haven’t tried these activities yet, I encourage you to give one a shot this week and see how it makes you feel. God works in mysterious (and surprisingly creative) ways, after all!
