Cabin Fever and ADHD

Do you know what cabin fever is?

It’s that feeling you get about this time of year when everything outside seems to be some shade of gray, you haven’t seen the sun in days, you’re sick of being cooped up in the house, and you just want to be warm.

Those of us with ADHD are prone to depression and this time of year can be especially bad. I’ve always said that February seemed like the longest month of the year.

Even though I take medication for my depression, it still affects me during the winter.

If you’re feeling the same, here are some things you can do to help:

Add Vitamin D to your diet. As much as 1000 – 3000 IU is good. If you’re uncomfortable with that, go with a lower amount. We get Vitamin D naturally from our foods and the sun, but most Americans are Vitamin D deficient just the same.

Make an effort to get outside each day, just for a little while. The fresh air and sunshine – if you can find any – will help lift your mood.

Don’t isolate yourself at home. Get out with people and not just at the mall. Visit a friend or relative or volunteer at the local senior living home.

Move! Get up off the couch and move more. Go for a walk outside. Take up mall walking. Just keep yourself busy around the house.

Don’t get in the habit of napping. Depression and sleep go hand in hand. If you find yourself taking a nap each day, first make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Then find something to keep yourself occupied while you try to break the nap habit.

Take up a new hobby. Find something that really interests you and then explore it. Have fun. It’s good for your brain too.

Start journaling. Writing down your thoughts is a good way to get them out of your head. Check out Positive Changes Journal a free online site that lets you journal and gives you positive journaling prompts.

Finally, look ahead. Spring isn’t too far away!

P.S. Bring a little spring into the house now. I’m thinking a pretty vase of tulips on my kitchen table might fit the bill.
