The irritation of passing the same unfinished, cluttered area in the house is all too familiar to me. I desperately wanted to improve small areas of the house, but my mind kept telling me that it would be a three-week project that would ruin my routine.
I realized that I needed to trick my brain into completing tasks that would make me fall deeper in love with my space without taking up too much time. If you’re feeling the same way about your home, think about the DIY home improvements that you can complete in a single day.
1. Add a Peel-and-Stick Backsplash
There’s no time for refinishing or painting kitchen cabinets. To give my kitchen a quick refresh, I ordered peel-and-stick tile to fix up the backsplash. Made with vinyl and an adhesive backing, I didn’t have to deal with cutting tiles or using grout. The fresh, new surface was easy to stick onto the wall.
2. Build an Entryway Landing Zone
As someone with ADHD, the entryway is a magnet for clutter. Shoes pile up by the door, bags land wherever there’s space, and mail stacks up in uneven piles. Without designated spots, these everyday items tend to drift and multiply.
To make sure I know where my keys and bags are at all times, I put together a landing zone in the entryway. Add a few hooks onto the wall for jackets, hats, bags, and keys. I added a narrow table along the wall where I could keep a few small baskets on the surface and my favorite shoes underneath. All I had to do was find hooks and a small table, and do a little organizing to get the job done.
3. Install a Modern Handrail Kit
I was constantly walking down the stairs while holding onto a wobbly wall-mounted handrail. Not to mention, the outdated design was an eyesore that needed to go. After months of deciding what to do next, I realized that I could choose an easy-install handrail system.
The DIY kit should have all the mounting materials needed to place the handrail onto the wall. All I had to do was pick the appropriate height for the railing and secure the mounting points. In a single afternoon, the problem became a thing of the past.
4. Replace Old Window Coverings
My bedroom and living room started to unaligned with the space’s overall vibe. The faded blinds and heavy curtains didn’t suit the light, airy ambience I wanted.
Window coverings are a simple fix. It will take some shopping to figure out exactly what you want. Curtains can soften bright light and add warmth, while streamlined blinds offer privacy with a clean look. However, updating them is a simple process.
Measure the window’s width and drop, so you choose a replacement that fits the first time. Before you begin installing, gather all your tools and keep them within reach to avoid interruptions.
Move slowly when mounting the new covering to ensure everything is level and secure. When you’re finished, test it by opening and closing it a few times to confirm smooth movement.
Improve Your Home With Small Projects
It doesn’t have to take weeks to complete a home improvement. DIY projects that you can complete in one day are exactly what you need to make your house feel more like home.
