Giving Yourself What You Need

Jump to:

As women and/or moms, we are really good at putting our needs last.

And when our ADHD complicates and confuses our lives further, it becomes even easier to let our needs go.

That’s not good. It’s not good for us nor is it good for our families and the people who surround us.

And when I talk about our needs, it goes beyond things like getting enough sleep and eating a decent meal. Although – do not be mistaken – those things are vital to your well being.

Everyone needs to be rested and clean, to have clean clothes to wear and something to eat.

But most of us, including you, need more.

Maybe they’re not the things you need to survive in the truest sense of the word, but you need them just the same.

For instance, the things that I need include certain medications and vitamins. Always having tea ready to drink and lemons in the house. Sunshine helps a lot, but I’ve learned to get through the gray days. An occasional bowl of pasta doesn’t hurt, either.

Simple things – none life changing – and yet they make my days easier to get through.

As an ADDers, there are certain things that you should try to keep in your life. Enough regular sleep, a sensible diet high in lean protein, lots of water and some form of exercise. (Park farther away when you go to Target if you have to.)

But you also need other things in your life, unique to you.

What are they? And are you letting yourself have them?

Your family might be grateful if you did.
