ADHD can present unique challenges when it comes to managing personal finances. Procrastination, impulsive purchases, and disorganized documents and thoughts are likely to inhibit financial growth and progress.
The right strategies, paired with a focused approach, can help you overcome these hurdles. Secure a more stable financial future by implementing these tips for establishing and achieving personal financial goals!
Create the Right Environment for Financial Planning
ADHD makes it difficult for me to maintain focus. Some days, no matter how much I want to accomplish something, my mind is elsewhere.
That’s why setting aside dedicated time and creating a distraction-free environment is the best way to concentrate and determine my financial goals. Choose a quiet space with minimal distractions. I try to limit my access to social media apps, TV, or music that are likely to derail my focus.
Lastly, I make sure I feel comfortable during this financial planning session. A nice chair, a pretty view, and a favorable temperature in the room always help me focus on the task at hand.
Customize the Financial Roadmap With Realistic Time Frames
Financial success doesn’t occur overnight. It will take time and dedication. Some goals may take longer to achieve than others, and that’s OK. That’s why everyone should customize their financial plan to suit their personal needs.
Start by breaking down the larger goals into smaller steps. For myself, I want to improve my credit score before applying for a personal loan to renovate the house. My first goal would be to choose a good credit card to strengthen my credit history.
Next, schedule deadlines for every goal. It could be goals to achieve within the next two months or a goal for the next three years. Just remember to write down goals that are attainable for each time frame.
Team Up With a Trusted Friend or Family Member
Sticking to a financial plan is easier when I have someone rooting for my success. I asked one of my closest friends to help me out and hold me accountable for my financial well-being.
We meet up for coffee every other month to talk about my spending habits and my progress. It’s a great way to motivate myself, stay on track, and not feel alone through this process.
Find Banking Services That Will Support Each Goal
Dedication paired with the right financial tools will support you as you establish and work to achieve your financial goals. Don’t be afraid to scout banks and credit unions for the best type of credit card for you. You want to make sure that the service you choose will work with your specific needs.
Journal the Financial Journey
When my mind becomes cluttered, I shut down and can’t think straight. I learned that keeping a journal helps me focus more on my financial journey. Rather than keeping notes on my phone and getting distracted, I learned that physically writing down how I’m spending money strengthens my awareness of my progress. In return, I feel more dedicated to working and achieving these goals.
Documenting these instances will hold me accountable for my financial behaviors. It’s an efficient way to see improvements!
