Company’s Coming

Jump to:

This weekend, my daughter and her boyfriend will be visiting us from Michigan. Because it’s been a while since they’ve seen them, several of our friends are coming over on Saturday evening to get together and catch up.

I’d like to share a little glimpse into our household as we prepare for company. Remember, everybody who lives in my house has Attention Deficit Disorder.

It’s Wednesday evening as I write this. I cleaned the kitchen really well on Monday, but I doubt that it will last until Friday, even with daily upkeep. That’s it. I’ve done nothing else other than vacuum and dust.

Wait until Friday – when you will see me rushing around like a crazy person, cleaning bathrooms and doing last minute shopping.

In contrast, my husband has decided that this is just the week to:

    Clean out the garage
    Shampoo the carpets
Climb into the attic to assess damage from the rains from Hurricane Ike
Prime and paint two bedroom ceilings
And possibly paint the bedroom, too – yes, the one she will be sleeping in

Did I mention he’s repairing the dryer?

Oh, and for the record – he got laid off on Friday, so this is partially his answer to not working – for pay, anyway.

I don’t know how much we will get done this week – I do have work to do as well – I just know that when our daughter arrives, we’ll both probably be too tired to stay up and visit.

Does this sound at all familiar to anyone else, or is it just us?

  1. It definitely sounds like our household, Brenda! We probably all have ADHD to some degree too. My husband wants the kids friends to come over because he knows I’ll clean up when people are coming to visit. He can be great about initiating and actually finishing some projects, but others he leaves in mid-stream or never starts – like repairing our door handle that’s been broken for months. All of my kids will just let the mess build up around them. I’ve always wanted us all to be on some sort of schedule, but it’s never worked out that way. Take care.

  2. Karissa – Glad to know it’s not just me! It’s the same for holidays. I mean Christmas comes the same time each year, right?

Fran – My husband knows that’s how our house gets cleaned, too, although I do try to make it presentable most of the time. I know what you mean about projects. The last house we lived in was a fixer upper. Some of the fixing got done or completed 10 years later when we put it up for sale 🙂
