As ADD Moms, we spend an awful lot of time trying to be something that we’re really not: a left brained person.
Left brained people are organized and on time and rarely forget things. They do things in a logical order and must be way productive.
We do not have left brain dominance. This is part of the reason that we spend our lives looking for the Holy Grails of organization and effective time management.
We tend to have right brain dominance.
We are creative. We think differently; our thought patterns differ from those of left brained people. We make connections between things that they don’t see.
We still have some of our childlike spirit and we can be downright silly given the chance.
So here’s my question: why aren’t you using that other brain? The one you were born with?
Why aren’t you using it in the manner in which it was meant to be used, instead of trying to make it be something that it’s not?
The world is really made for left brained people. We do have obligations and schedules and a million things to keep track of.
That can be hard for us. But you already knew that.
Here is what I’m suggesting though: give your right brained half time to come out and play on a regular basis.
Play with your kids, if they’ll let you. And no, not board games or tossing a ball (although those are good too). What about getting out the squirt guns instead? Or finger paints?
I have this idea that’s been in the back of my head for months.
I think that we ADD Moms were born to do something wonderful in the world, and that we need that other brain to do it.
I think that we can learn to manage the hard things, like time and organization to the best of our ability, and then I think we need to let go a little bit and be who we really are.
