An ADD Lesson from Our Thanksgiving Meal

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Are you ready for it? Are you cooking? And how does our Thanksgiving meal relate to ADHD?

Well, most of us, even those of us with ADHD, prepare ahead of time for our Thanksgiving meal.

If you are making dinner or even just a part of it, you had to plan ahead.

You have to get the turkey at least a few days before Thanksgiving in order to let it thaw. Even – back in the good old days – when I could get a fresh turkey from the local turkey farm, I had to prepare in advance. No thawing needed, but I had to call and order it and arrange for pick up.

There were people tonight on my Facebook showing how much they had already prepped, by chopping onions and cubing bread for stuffing, setting the table, and even baking a few pies.

That preparing ahead stuff? That’s a good lesson. Not just for Thanksgiving (or Christmas which is only three weeks away) but for everyday life.

That’s why I suggest the Sunday Night Plan so that you can prepare ahead of time for the week ahead.

Preparing ahead works for lots of things.

I have a bit of phone phobia. I don’t really like using the phone and I hate having to make any kind of business call on it. I mean. somebody hacked one of my accounts a few weeks ago and I had to work to make myself make that call.

So whenever I have to make one of those calls (and yes, I’m shy about coaching calls too), I prepare in advance.

I decide what I need to ask or talk about and then I rehearse the conversation in my head. This helps calm my nerves enough to be able to make the call, plus I’m more likely to remember everything I wanted to ask about.

What if you prepared in advance for things?

How about setting aside an extra pair of socks or underwear or even a whole outfit for those mornings when someone needs clean clothes and the laundry hasn’t been done?

Or maybe keeping a simple pantry meal or two on hand for when you need dinner on the table now?

Hiding a $20 bill someplace in case you need it?

Think about the things that usually trip you up in life, and then see if you can come up with a solution that will let you prepare ahead of time for it.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL. YOU ARE ONE OF THE REASONS THAT I AM THANKFUL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.
