No I’m not talking about the state of your clothes closet. But since I mentioned it – how bad is it?
What I really meant was – how well do you dress?
As ADD Moms, we can become a little complacent with the way we look. We take care of everyone else and make sure they have clean, well fitting clothes to wear, but how often do we do the same for ourselves?
And yes, by the way, this is about ADHD.
You know how sometimes our ADD causes us to miss things right in front of us? To not see the dust bunnies all about the house?
Well that same quality keeps us from seeing that we are wearing clothing that no longer fits us properly or that has a stain or a tear. And yes, when you get bleach on your black shirt, that’s considered a stain too.
You might think it’s not so important how we look, but you’re wrong.
ADHD gives us low self esteem; dressing well makes us feel better about ourselves.
ADHD can give people the wrong opinion about us; dressing well and taking care of ourselves challenges that.
Not caring about how you look plays into depression and tells your subconscious that you’re not worthy. Taking care to look nice lifts your spirits and makes you feel worthy.
So, convinced yet?
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Go through your wardrobe and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit. No more fat clothes. No more I’ll lose weight and get into these clothes. And if it’s more than 3 years old, pitch it!
Do I need to tell you to toss the stained, ripped, stretched out stuff? I didn’t think so.
Take what’s left and put it in your closet. Hang the hangers the opposite way you usually do.
In a week or two, take a look and see which hangers are still hanging the wrong way. Those are the clothes you never wear. Unless it’s something special, like an outfit you wear for special occasions, get rid of it.
From this point on, you’re going to build a wardrobe that will make you feel good and look good.
Pick a set of neutrals: are you black/navy/gray or brown/tan/khaki? You can wear all of these, but it’s easier to start with one group or the other. These are your basics for things like suits, dress pants and skirts, and shoes.
Next learn to simplify and upgrade what you wear.
If you’re normally jeans and t shirts or sweatshirts, go for jeans that fit properly and nicer tops. Ditch anything with a beer (or other) logo on it. Choose simple tees from the department store, not the big baggy kind. Switch out sweatshirts for sweaters. And if you live in sweatpants, at least go for yoga pants instead.
If you need a work wardrobe, some nice dress pants and sweater sets or nice tops will work.
Add a blazer for work or a simpler cardigan or jacket for jeans.
Upgrade to boots or comfy shoes instead of athletic shoes. At the very least, choose athletic looking shoes that aren’t meant for the gym.
Add some personality with a necklace or scarf, even if you’re wearing jeans and a tee.
Take some care with how you look. You will look and feel better, and people will respond accordingly.
