Did you know that a blanket can actually help your ADHD symptoms?
It can help calm you down, relax you, and lower stress and anxiety. It can even help you sleep better at night.
But not just any blanket.
A therapeutic weighted blanket.
Applying weight and slight pressure to the body has long been a tool of occupational therapists.
It could mean laying on a bean bag chair with another one on top of you. For some, it means throwing yourself onto a soft, padded surface. Sometimes parents find a great big bear hug works to calm their child down.
In every case, there is weight and pressure being applied to the body.
A weighted blanket does the same thing.

Apparently the weight of the blanket creates a reaction in the brain, causing it to release serotonin and dopamine, which help to calm and can even help with depression.
Blankets vary in size and weight and are based on the person’s height and body weight. You would choose the length depending on how tall you are; this is the less important factor and not all companies will give you a choice more specific than adult size.
The rule of thumb for weight is 10% of your weight plus 1 pound.
The ones that I have looked at are washable. The weight is provided by small plastic beads which can withstand the washer and low dryer heat.
There are a number of companies that offer weighted blankets; all are online. The average price is $100 – 150.00.
I also checked Etsy and initially thought the prices were lower, but many of the prices you see are for small blankets for children. The adult ones seem to be comparable to the online stores.
