Preparing for the Holidays

Jump to:

A few weeks ago, I did about 75% of my holiday shopping online. I was so proud of myself, being ready for the holidays so soon.

This morning I decided to check on my orders to see when they might arrive.

It turns out that instead of having my shopping almost done, I have barely begun.

Most of my shopping was done on Amazon, where I got some great deals but apparently had not changed my billing information. Christmas shopping on an expired card gets you nowhere.

Did I mention that I have ADHD?

The holiday season is crazy and hectic for everyone, but for those of us with ADHD, it can be even more so.

Want proof? Here it is:

Anyway, you want your holidays to turn out better than mine seem to, right?

Here are some thoughts:

Keep it simple. I spent at least 2 extra days this week buying even more food for Thanksgiving, just in case we didn’t have enough. I also bought serving dishes I chose not to use. Don’t let the “holiday spirit” cause you to over do.

Make a list and check it twice. Don’t buy anything that isn’t on the list, and be sure to double check it to make sure it’s reasonable. Also, do you have sizes and colors on that list?

Avoid the mall. Some of us become overwhelmed at the mall, even during normal times. I get dizzy, my daughter sometimes has panic attacks. Try shopping online or at small local shops. At the very least, shop during weekdays if you can.

Set a budget and stick to it. Use cash if possible rather than credit.

Do less and make what you do more meaningful. Skip the obligatory things that your family dreads, if you can. Learn to say no. You want to make memories here, not crazy inducing times.

Relax a little. There are always more social events going on at this time of year, which can make those of us with ADHD a little anxious. No one is really judging you, and if they are, who needs them? Smile, talk less and be yourself.

Take some time for yourself. You always need it and this time of year, even more so. Running yourself ragged helps no one. Give yourself the gift of some time to unwind.

Finally, remember the best gifts that you can give are memories. Make some good ones.
