31 Day Challenge: Day 31

Participating in this 31 Day Challenge and writing every day about order has inspired me and my home looks better for it.

Many areas of my home have been decluttered, cleaned, and put to order.

And there is something that I have discovered along the way: restoring order is much easier than creating it.

Restoring order requires merely that you put things back where they belong; creating order is a much more complicated step, but one worth taking.

One of the areas that I wanted to tackle – that’s been on my list for a long time – is my side of our bedroom closet. It was a disaster! I had summer clothes mixed with winter ones, shoes everywhere, shoe boxes and bags from shoe stores (are we seeing a pattern here?), various papers, bags like tote bags and purses, and more.

There had once been order in this space and some of the bones remained.

I don’t use dressers in my house. I find that they contribute to mess rather than taming it. One search through a drawer for a certain shirt can create a lot of chaos!

Instead, I hang almost everything except underwear, socks, pjs, and sweaters. I have 5 baskets on my closet shelf – one for each plus one for my purses.

Despite the mess in the closet, I was able to put it back to order in about 30 minutes.

I got rid of an entire garbage bag full of trash, did a quick sort on the papers and put them aside for later, and then put everything else in it’s basket. I forgot to mention – I have a sixth basket on the floor for my shoes.

I would never have guessed that it would only take 30 minutes to make that closet look new again; if I had known, it might have been done sooner!

So remember, if you have established order in the past, it’s easy to restore it.

And if you haven’t, there’s real value in taking the time to do it.
